VHS-C is the compact VHS format introduced in 1982 and used primarily for consumer-grade compact analog camcorders. The format is based on the same video tape as is used in VHS, and can be played back in a standard VHS VCR with an adapter.
VHS-C camcorders were very popular and here at National Video Centre we get a steady supply of home videos on VHS-C from our customers.
The tapes were also available in a higher resolution S-VHS-C version. They could only be played by S-VHS camcorders and VCR’s. These tapes are rarer, as S-VHS equipment was a lot more expensive, being semi-professional and fewer people had it, as a result.
Some adapters had S-VHS-C logo printed and others VHS-C one, being exactly the same. Don’t be confused, they can be used with video cassettes of either format.
There are two version of VHS-C adapters, battery operated and mechanical. If you have the mechanical one, you should use it with care, they are not as good as battery operated ones and tend to chew tape if cassette inserted incorrectly.
